Why Choose Eco Friendly Nappies?
Before I start I want to say that I am an advocate of reusable nappies. I think they are great for the environment and if you can use them for part or all of your babies needs you SHOULD. But, I have to be honest with you as there are downsides too!
Many families like ours are not able to use reusable nappies for the following reasons:
- Overly sensitive skin problems that is susceptible to nappy rash in cloth nappies. For us we tried reusable nappies from when our little was 3 months and for the first 6 months we had no problems. We used the nappies at home and trad-disposable when we went out. However once she started teething she got really bad nappy rash and it was hard for us to manage changing her constantly.
- Extra washing and nappy care may not work for your family’s lifestyle. We were luckily that we started using reusable nappies in the summer and so could wash and care for them in our garden. But if you are a family with no-garden, live in a cold country, then its hard to find the time to dry and maintain them. If you are interested in the steps needed to wash a cloth nappy check out my article where I go through the step-by-step process on How To Wash a Cloth Nappy.
- Lack of space for many families storing and using reusable nappies may not be an option because of the space needed to store and clean them. Additionally, if you are planning your newborn baby’s room which is small. You are already having to work out where the cot and other baby bit will go without having to worry about extra nappy storage.
Understand the Biodegradable Materials in Nappies
According to companies like Kit and Kin by utilizing unique plantcell technology, once used eco friendly disposable nappies break down faster and so can be composted of thrown away with normal house hold rubbish. Their absorbent wood pulp core, , ensures maximum absorbency distributing liquid away from skin.
Compostable Designs
It should be mentioned that lots of eco friendly disposable nappies brands are report the use of plant cell fibres in their eco-nappies and from what I gather that can mean anything from wood pulp core to bamboo lining. The most important thing to look for it how much of the nappy is bio-degradable as you will have to remove the non-biodegradable parts if you want to compost.
The designs of eco friendly disposable nappies are FSC approved and most eco nappy brands are B Corp which means they have a commitment to give back to workers and the environment.
It should also be noted that eco friendly disposable nappies are NOT 100% biodegradable, the ratio is about 80/20 so make sure you check to see which parts like the straps which are often made of plastic.
Importance of Sustainable Packaging
If you haven’t already noticed traditional disposable nappies are packaged in single-use plastic which can not be recycled or reduced again in produce. Whereas, if you were you use eco-nappy brands they try to ensure that the packaging is made from either recycled plastic and or D2W.
But what is D2W I hear you ask. According to Green Smiles, its an additive that when added to plastics renders it biodegradable! Yes its true!
Nappy Comparison Table
Just before we review my top six nappy brands lets do a quick compare and contrast of reusable, eco-nappies and single-use brands.
Nappy Type | Pros | Cons |
Reusable | Can be reused for years. kind to skin. Easy to wash and dry. 0 cost if you have a 2nd child. Once used can be sold or donated. | Bigger upfront purchase cost. Certain brands look blucky. Takes up space to dry and store. |
Biodegradable | Made from biodegradable materials. Kind to skin. Compostable. Convenient to use. Can take 4 years to decompose | Some brands are not 100% compostable. Higher cost than single-use nappies. |
Single-use | Cheaper price point Easy to buy from most shops | Takes 400 years to decompose. Made from fossil oils Comes in plastic packaging |
Analysis
Reusable nappies are the only type that can make you money if you were to sell on after use. Reusable and Biodegradable are more expensive upfront but can save money in the long run. single-use are cheaper and easier to buy but are so much worse for the environment.
