Our Food Subscription Journey
We first discovered HelloFresh years ago as my husband an I weren’t picky eaters but we found that we were cooking to same meals over and over again. We were looking for new recipe ideas and a way to cook without thinking too much.
The concept of subscription meals was new to us so when we looked online for the best food subscription boxes HelloFresh was the first to come up. When the box arrived we were amazing with meal options and how easy it was to cook each evening.
I’ll be honest there were some meals that did not work (e.g. home made Pizza). On the whole all the meals were delicious, we got to keep the recipes to cook again. So from there onwards whenever we want to explore new options we sign up to a food subscription boxes.
Pros and Cons of Food Subscription Boxes
So do the benefits of food boxes outweigh the cons? I’ve put together a nifty table for you to consider both sides.
Exploring diverse recipes and cooking styles is hassle-free with food subscription boxes.
Although subscription boxes minimize food waste, the packaging used may be concerning.
They offer a good value for high-quality, fresh ingredients and vibrant flavours.
While the meal delivery frequency of recipe boxes may be excessive for some, others with dietary restrictions can find options limited.
Minimal cooking makes them a popular choice for busy individuals and families seeking convenience and healthy meal solutions.
Some individuals may feel restricted by the lack of control over their ingredients.
Subscription boxes also provide variety and cuisines to cater to different preferences.
While the carbon emissions associated with delivery can be a drawback for environmentally conscious consumers.
With the nice touch of ready meals, they offer a great choice for those looking for convenient and delicious meal options.
Despite appearing expensive, they often come with discounts and can save money in the long run by reducing food waste.
Top UK-Based Food Subscription Box Companies for Families
Let’s have a look at the top 6 UK options for food subscription boxes. These options ensure a variety of healthy, convenient, and flavoursome meals for families across the UK.
There are food options for just about any taste these days (e.g. vegan, veggie, high protein) and many companies offer a discounted or free trial if recommended by a friend.
Overview of Services and Family-Friendly Meal Options by HelloFresh
HelloFresh, one of the oldest meal plan subscriptions, offers a range of family-friendly meal options. Their flexible menus cater to diverse family needs, including vegetarian, meat, and fish options for the week.
Each nutritious, balanced meal is designed with families in mind and can be customized to accommodate individual preferences. So we picked fish for me and meat for our daughter. We LOVE their cauliflower and potato curry its now evening meal staple.
The family-oriented meal kits come in sustainable packaging for example wool and ice packs to keep the food fresh. We even reused the wool by stuffing it up our chimney as insulation! All in all HelloFresh definitely simplifying meal prep for busy parents.
One negative I would say is that they have changed their recipes using upsell techniques to improve the recipes (e.g. pay £2 more for bacon in a cauliflower cheese recipe) which I don’t like as they didn’t use to do that.
Lastly, HelloFresh is a B Corp, reflecting their commitment to eco-friendly food production, packaging, and employment practices.
Gousto’s Recipe Customization and Sustainable Packaging Initiatives
Gousto provides a wide range of 75 weekly customizable recipe options to suit different family tastes, encouraging healthy and family-centric cooking. The varied, family-friendly recipes cater to different dietary requirements, including vegetarian, dairy free, and 10 min meal options.
Their sustainable packaging is environmentally friendly, contributing to a greener and more sustainable lifestyle. Plus they have a big emphasis on reducing food waste by providing the exact amount of food you need.
Overall we really liked Gousto’s recipes, ingredients and flavours better than the others here. However everyone’s tastes are different so I recommend trying before making a commitment.
Mindful Chef’s Emphasis on Healthy and Organic Ingredients
With its emphasis on healthy, family-oriented, and organic ingredients, Mindful Chef delivers nutrient-rich, balanced meals that support a healthy, family-centric lifestyle.
The focus on organic ingredients not only fosters sustainable, eco-friendly food choices but also promotes wholesome, mindful eating habits for families. Overall Mindful chef is a little more expensive £6 per portion but that is because if the quality and sourcing of ingredients.
I also really like that they have incorporated the ethos of mindfulness into eating which is so important for the environment and healthy eating as a family.
Focus on seasonal and organic produce at Riverford
Riverford prides itself on highlighting fresh, seasonal, and organic produce for family meals, prioritizing high-quality, seasonal ingredients for family-focused meal options. They have the UK’s no. 1 veggie box and are on a mission to save British farms.
They also provide recipe boxes which is a great way to buy British and ensure British farmers continue to thrive and prosper. Riverford ensure that all produce is follows their strict eco-friendly packaging rules which is that they collect your old packaging to reuse!
Riverford have some really delish recipes like their chestnut in red wine cassolette. The only downside is that they don’t have as many family recipes as I would like.
Organic and ethically sourced produce at Able & Cole
Able & Cole offers a superb selection of organic and ethically sourced produce, catering to eco and health-conscious individuals and families. They provide fruit and veg boxes, house hold goods as well as recipe boxes.
I love the convenience of receiving a thoughtfully curated box of breakfast, lunch and dinner boxes which is fresh and seasonal. As it saves time and effort on meal planning and shopping. They also promise zero air miles as produce is UK sourced and deliver right to your door!
To give fair balance Able and Cole don’t provide recipe boxes in the same way as the other companies do. You go to the recipe section select the meal you want and then bulk ad the ingredients to your basket. This could get a little complicated if you want to select a weeks worth for a family of four.
Plant based meal choices for families at The Green Chef
Whilst all of the other meal subscription companies offer vegan, low carb, keto The Green Chef specialise in dietary needs. At The Green Chef, families can explore an array of plant-based meal, pescatarian options conveniently delivered in subscription boxes.
These nutrition approved chef curated boxes simplify meal planning if you have dietary needs using ethically-sourced ingredients. We found when looking for vegan recipes online they can sometimes be highly processed foods which is no better than meat or fish options.
The Green Chef’s subscription boxes are a great choice for families looking for new and well-loved nutritious and delicious plant-based meals or other dietary options.

Easy to select meals for family.
|Not a B Corp.
Packaging is not as sustainable as other brands.
In terms of cost, After looking through the table the median cost per box for a family of four was £73.66. The most expensive food subscription box is Able & Cole at £160 and the cheapest is Gousto at £54.85.
Bear in mind the Able & Cole don’t offer ingredients in exact measurements hence the higher price. Riverford don’t appear to offer meals for a family of four for the week. HelloFresh costed £59.98 and Mindful Chef £82.13 and Green Chef costs £85.00
All of the companies except Green Chef are B Corps which is evident in the way they promote and package their foods. I’m sure Green Chef pack their food sustainably but as they are not a B Corp they are not bound by the same green commitments.
HelloFresh, Gousto, Mindful Chef and Green Chef are very easy to navigate and plan the evening meals. Whereas the other websites are clunky and not so easy to use.
